ADVANCED 120 MM LIGHTWEIGHT TANK DEMONSTRATOR: DIRECT MODELLING OF THE INTERIOR, INTERMEDIATE AND EXTERIOR BALLISTICS AS WELL AS THE WEAPON SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT

For several years we have been working on the development of a CFD code called FREIN 21-29, 31. This code is the result of a strong cooperation between Nexter Munitions and the University of Poitiers. It allows to compute the internal and the intermediate ballistics in a coupled manner. In the last years, efforts have been carried out to improve the 3D modelling. In this paper, theoretical developments and computations have been applied to the simulation of the firing of an advanced 120 mm lightweight tank demonstrator. This demonstrator was developed by Nexter Systems Company under the support of the French MOD. The objective is to show the feasibility of the integration of a high performance 120 mm gun on a median platform of class 25 tons. In a fully unsteady way, the interior, intermediate and exterior ballistics were modelized as well as the weapon system environment. In comparison with firing experiments, first computation validation results are presented and are very satisfactory. This paper focuses mainly on the prediction of pressure applied on the demonstrator vehicle.
