RESEARCH ON THE DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF A SUPER LARGE CALIBER DAVIS GUN BARREL

A versatile Davis gun with a smooth bore barrel of 425mm inside diameter is designed and produced to meet the experimental demand. The muzzle kinetic energy can be as high as 200 million Joule. The gun was fired to test the performance. The strain outside the chamber was measured and recorded to make sure the gun works well. The pressure inside the chamber and barrel was also recorded. Numerical simulation was also performed to simulate the dynamic response of the barrels and chamber. Comparison of the simulation results and experimental results shows that the maximum simulation strain is 6.2% larger than the experimental ones. Numerical simulation sometimes can substitute experimental test for time and capital saving.
