AN ANALYTIC CYLINDER TEST MODEL
An analytic cylinder test model has been developed by aRDEC for explosive equation of state calibration and verification. The analytic model was based on adiabatic expansion along the principle isentrope from the Chapman-Jouguet state. Several assumptions for the detonation products expansion flow geometries have been investigated and compared. In particular, a final form assumes that the products flow is tangential to the cylinder inside surface and perpendicular to a hemispherical surface with constant density and internal energy properties along the hemispherical surface. Additionally, when cylinder thinning is accounted, the resulting analytic model provides close agreement to high rate continuum modeling. Coupled with non-linear optimization, this analytic cylinder test model provides a quick and accurate method for JWL and JWLB equation of state parameterization. Excellent agreement between the analytic cylinder test and high rate continuum modeling predicted cylinder velocities is achieved when using the same JWL or JWLB parameters. However, as it has been hypothesized, some combined effects explosives expand from a weak point on the fully reacted Hugoniot, the validity of the analytic cylinder test comes into question for these explosives. Traditional Chapman-Jouguet detonation theory does not explain the observed detonation states achieved by these combined effects explosives. Eigenvalue detonation theory explains the observed behavior. For this reason, the analytic cylinder test model was updated to include eigenvalue detonation theory and associated adiabatic expansion from the fully reacted Hugoniot weak point. The results show a small reduction of explosive work output for eigenvalue detonations compared to Chapman-Jouguet detonations.
