EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE CHARGE OF A MULTI-MODE WARHEAD

This work analyzes a charge configuration with an ejectable cross-shaped cutting reseau fixed at a proper place before the liner for a multi-mode warhead using experimental and numerical approaches. It is designed to realize two damage units respectively: the single EFP (Explosive Formed Projectile) and directional fragments. When there is no cutting reseau a single EFP is formed and while it is there directional fragment can be formed. An experimental set-up with an X-ray system was used to provide the actual forming of the single EFP. On the other hand, the space distribution and terminal effect of the directional fragments were tested to study the damage power. For a better understanding of the details of the process, numerical simulations were performed with the commercial code LS-DYNA 3D, using Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The study indicates that the single EFP have a good aerodynamic stability with a velocity of 1500m/s and it can penetrate through the 45# steel targets which are laid in the 48m far place with a thickness of 30mm; The directional fragments have an velocity between 1400 and 1800m/s with an even distribution and can penetrate the same target with a thickness of 6mm at the same distance.
