STUDY ON PENETRATION OF CONCRETE TARGETS WITH CYLINDRICAL-NOSE-TIP PROJECTILE

Recently Joseph presented a concept of terradynamic cavity similar to hydrodynamic cavity during penetration, which may contribute to increase DOP, and his penetration experiments into sand and water showed that the terradynamic cavity was generated and DOP rose. However he did not conduct more penetrations into other materials such as concrete, rock to further verify his idea. In this study, several cylindrical-nose-tip projectiles(CNTP), which were referred to Josephs concept, have been fired to penetrate into concrete targets with compressive strength of 9MPa and 28.4MPa.By observing recovered projectiles and cutting post-test targets, penetration mechanism of CNTPs is investigated, and then two dimensionless factors, S2 of target strength degradation factor and b, of the tunnel radius produced by the nose tip, are introduced into penetration formulas. The analytical results with the extended penetration formulas for CNTPs are in good agreement with experimental data for 28.4MPa concrete targets, but somewhat underestimated for 9MPa concrete targets.
