BALLISTIC RESISTANCE OF DOUBLE-LAYERED METALLIC PLATES IMPACTED BY BLUNT PROJECTILES

The possibility of replacing a monolithic metallic plate with layered ones to have a safer ballistic protective design has been an active research tipic. However, the effect of replacing monolithic plates with double-layered ones is not fully clear. Aluminum alloy plates of the thickness of 1/5 to 2 times of the projectile diameter were investigated numerically by AUTODYN hydro-code for the case of blunt projectile impact in the present study. Johnson-Cook strength and failure model were used to characterize the target materials behavior under large strain, high strain rate and high temperature. Results obtained from the simulations showed that doublelayering make plates of almost all the thickness more resistant than the corresponding monolithic plates. Furthermore, the validation of the simulation is evaluated by several published tests.
