THE ROLE OF KELVIN-HELMHOLTZ INSTABILITIES ON SHAPED CHARGE JET INTERACTION WITH REACTIVE ARMOUR PLATES
INTRODUCTION Reactive armour panels, consisting of two steel plates sandwiched around a layer of high-explosive, are very efficient as add-on armour against shaped charge warheads. When the shaped charge jet impacts the reactive panel the high explosive initiates and accelerates the plates in opposite directions. After a small delay, the moving perforated plates start to interact with the jet and this interaction results in an almost totally fragmented and scattered jet which reduces the penetration capability of the jet drastically. When studying the effects of reactive armour it is thus important to understand the details of the interaction and the origin of the disturbances on the jet.
