DYNEEMA FABRIC DATA SET FOR THE CALIBRATION OF FABRIC PENETRATION MODELS

The mechanics related to the impact of fabric-based personnel armor systems are not as well understood as those for metallic-based vehicle armor systems. Databases do exist for fragmentation protection of various fabric-based systems on which very specialized numerical and analytical models are based. But, very little data are available in the open literature for current pistol ammunition to calibrate these fabric models for other applications. In this paper, we are presenting a baseline calibration data set for the 9-mm M882 NATO Ball round and 64-grain right circular cylinders (RCC) against 10, 20, and 30 plies of Dyneema UD-SB31 composite sheets. Vso values were calculated using the Maximum Likelihood Method. Estimates for the limit velocity and parameters describing the overmatching case are based on Lamberts Vs/Vr Method. Data are presented in sufficient detail to allow for calibration and verification of numerical and analytical models against both the 9-mm and fragmentation threats.
