EVALUATION METHODS FOR BALLISTIC PERFORMANCE OF PERSONNEL ARMOR MATERIALS

Ballistic limit testing determines the limits of ballistic performance such as V50, which is the velocity at which, for a given projectile and armor target, the probability of perforation of the armor target is 50%. In this paper, ballistic limit testing methods are studied. First, a probability and statistics model of the ballistic performance is discussed. With introduction of uncertainties in both armor material properties and test methods, such as the impact velocity control, Monte Carlo simulations are then carried out to investigate the expectations of the test results against the true armor ballistic performance. Results indicate, among other things, that human factors have a significant influence on the test results. Finally, a practical and feasible approach is proposed to obtain an improved description of the ballistic performance with accumulated test results. The confidence level of the statistical description is related to the number of accumulated results.
