A METHOD FOR ASSESSMENT OF THE BALLISTIC RESISTANCE OF LIGHT TRANSPARENT ARMORS
In the development of transparent armors a main issue is the evaluation of the ballistic resistivity of a given composition, usually requiring a compromising between the need to gain maximum ballistic data with minimum number of tests. Most ballistic evaluation standard methods give answer to only one of those needs. In this paper we present a method that can give some answer for both demands. First, it is shown that a linear correlation exists between the impact and absorbed energies, so that as the first is increased so does the other. Then, by equalizing the two energies, a value of ballistic energy limit is defined that expresses the ballistic protection level of the glass armor. The paper will describe the exact testing conditions, the methodology used for obtaining the values of the ballistic energy limit and how these values may be used in improved armor design.
