NOVEL AMMUNITION CONSUMPTION MODEL FOR VULNERABILITY/LETHALITY ANALYSIS TO DEFEAT AIR TARGETS

The utility of a newly developed ammunition consumption model for assessing the effectiveness of active protection schemes is reported. The model takes into account interceptor logic, fragmentation mechanisms (including Pearsons shear control method) and projections, and, among others, the effects of delayed and prompt detonation target response. The error budget of the weapon system for the time critical defeat of dynamic point targets is implemented into the model. Intercept, fragment kill, and fuze probabilities are taken into account. The usefulness of the model is shown by comparing naturally and controlled fragmenting HE projectiles of a 155 mm counter-RAM system against mortar threats. An approach for optimizing controlled fragments maximizes the multiple hit kill probability and takes typical intercept situations into account.
