The Past, Present and Future of Display Technology
Displays are usually partitioned into three families, cathode ray tubes(CRT), flat panel displays(FPD) and projection. CRTs had been the most prevalent display device, among the most familiar being TV sets and monitors. The FPDs was replacing the CRT as the dominant devices for main stream applications. Despite the dominance of LCD in FPDs, several other devices are competing for the myriad of potential applications. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses, which may be optimum for one set of applications and less competitive in others. The most technology challenges in display are to produce cost effective devices and to create new applications with an effective infrastructure, production technology, and new devices. In recent technology development, flexible display based on organic materials and printing methods represent one of the future displays, which are really bendable and designable displays like roll-up display and wearable display. These organic materials may be efficient in using roll-to-roll processing. The roll-to-roll fabrication could meet the cost targets and match the desired schedule to move flexible display into the market. This presentation will feature a look at major FPDs, world wide market of displays and challenging issues on flexible display for the future display.
