Accelerated Gemological Image Analysis for Opal Grading

Quantitative assessment and evaluation of opals has been a challenging task even for a skilled opal assessor. It is highly subjective because of the complexity of opal assessment and the limitation of human visual observation. We have developed the world’s first automated device, Gemological Digital Analyser (GDA), to grade opals using image analysis. The evaluation produced by the GDA is objective and reproducible. As a result of the large number of images acquired for evaluating each opal, it takes a long time for the GDA to process each opal. This is not efficient, nor commercially viable. To tackle this problem, we have proposed a high performance image analysis solution. Experimental results show that, with the proposed solution, the performance of GDA has been improved and, on average 36% processing time reduction has been achieved.
