Implementing Colour Appearance and Local Adaptation in Digital Photography
While consumer digital photography is intended to produce a pleasing image of a scene, it does not necessarily convey the appearance of that scene. In order to do this, a colour appearance model must be applied to the scene colorimetry estimates computed from the raw camera output. A method to insert appearance processing into the digital pipeline using CIECAM02 is described, together with options for local adaptation. Following spectral characterization of a Nikon D70 camera, CIE XYZ estimates were computed by means of an appearance-based optimization. Finally local adaptation processing is applied. The goal is to work towards achieving a more perceptually realistic reproduction, rather than an exact colorimetric reproduction of the scene.
