Real-Time Tone-Mapping of High Dynamic Range Image Using Gazing Area Information
Tone mapping operators (TMOs) are important to reproduce the appearance and the impression of high dynamic range (HDR) images. Generally, it is required to incorporate human visual characteristics into TMOs for realistic reproduction, and many TMOs have been proposed based on this observation. However, those TMOs take into account not local area decided by gazing area information, but global area which means overall area of an HDR image. Gazing area is one of the important factors in human visual characteristics. In this study, therefore, we present the system to reproduce the preferable appearance of HDR images by incorporating gazing area information into a conventional TMO. The TMO is performed within the gazing area in real time. For validating our system, we conducted subjective evaluation experiments. In the experiments, observers evaluated the preferable appearance by the comparison between our local tone-mapped HDR images using gazing area information and conventional global tone-mapped ones. From the results, we found that our system is efficient for tone-mapping of HDR images.
