An Alternative Method to Sensor Spectral Characterization
Knowledge about the spectral sensitivity response of the image sensor under study plays an important role in the field of color research such as color constancy. Many algorithms require the spectral sensitivity for prediction of the sensor’s behavior and parameter calibration, and the accuracy of this data could have noticeable effects on the performance of the algorithms. Such data, however, are often not easily available, and the measurement process not only requires expensive equipment but is also time consuming. To achieve a balance among performance of the algorithm, cost, and complexity of data measurement, we propose an alternative method to the spectral characterization process through capturing the images of a standard test target under controlled lighting. We also discuss the challenges faced by the alternative process, and evaluate the method through its application in an illuminant estimation algorithm.
