Study on Original Image Gamut and Gamut Mapping Adaptability in Digital Printing

Image-dependent color gamut mapping is one of the most important trends in gamut mapping work. And many researchers have studied more in the area of new and common method for gamut mapping. In this paper, characteristics of different digital images gamuts were studied. The characteristics of several kinds of digital images, shadow image (Red Couch), highlight image Wedding), group portraits image (Younger of Different Skin Colors), lady portrait image, neutral gray image, full-tone image (Fruits), and memory color image Bridge with Roof) were investigated. We proposed four characteristics of image gamut including gamut volume, color distribution density, projection on ab plane and smoothness. The experiments indicated that there were distinct differences among them. We used the same gamut mapping methods for those above original images and evaluated the mapping results, and we found that the gamut mapping results were great different when various images with different gamut characteristics were mapped using the same method. It indicated that the quality of color gamut mapping was influenced by source gamut characteristics greatly and special algorithms should be used and readjustments of gamut should be adopted in image-dependent color gamut mapping. The results help to study on new common color gamut mapping algorithms of image-dependent.
