Fabrication of Photonic Recording Materials from Liquid Crystals and a Polymer Template Abstract

In this paper, a polymer template method was utilized to fabricate new photonic recording materials with multi-pitched photonic structure. Polymer template with helical structure was originated from a polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals. Cholesteric liquid crystals (Ch-LCs) are subsequently imbibed into the polymer template, resulting in films with distinct optical characteristics. The SEM result demonstrated that the helix-structure memory effect of the polymer template is an important factor of the resulting film properties. The surface patterning of the Ch-LCs film with a double-handed circularly polarized light reflection band can be achieved under a mask by the above method. The result could be used in many potential applications such as information recording, security technologies make use of patterned, monolithic optical layers, and for authentication processes of brand and product protection.
