Morphological Studies of a Dicholesteryl Compound Forming Glassy Liquid Crystal Behavior

Cholesteryl cinnamate is photodimerized and dicholesteryl diphenyl cyclobutanediate (DDC) with a rigid chain cyclobutane is synthesized. Glassy cholesteric DDC liquid crystal (LC) is prepared, and the principle of glassy LC is discussed. In-situ studies of structural and morphological changes during the process of forming glassy LC of DDC are carried out by using synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A unique image analysis method is used to deconvolute the twodimensional (2D) WAXD patterns into quantitative fractions of crystal, mesomorphic, and amorphous phases. The test shows that it could be reversibly solidified and maintained cholesteric colors. In addition, the color of the solid could be controlled and selected from the entire visible region, and color switch is considerable fast, so it can be used as rewritable color recording materials.
