Electropolymerized PEDOT: PSS Films Derived From Isopropanol Solution and Its Application in Organic Electroluminescent Devices

Poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) films were prepared on the indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates directly by in situ electropolymerization in isopropanol solution containing tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate(Bu4NBF4) as supporting electrolyte. Then the as-prepared films were served as hole injection layers (HIL) in the single-layer organic light emitting devices with the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MEH-PPV/Al. In comparison with the devices using the blank ITO glass and the PEDOT:PSS film by conventional spin-coating method, the device with electropolymerized PEDOT:PSS film exhibited significant improvements in terms of turn-on voltage, current density and the maximum brightness. The enhancements were supposed to result from the partly ordered films in the process of electrochemical polymerization. The in-situ electrochemical polymerization provided facilitating manufacturing procedures of conducting polymers films and may offer a novel and economical route for producing organic electroluminescent (EL) devices.
