Miniemulsion Polymerization and Characterization of Spirobenzopyran-based Photochromic Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles bearing photochromic spirobenzopyran dyads, N-alkyl-3,3-dimethylspiro-2H-1-Benzopyrane-6-nitro-2,2-indoline, have been prepared by a modified miniemulsion polymerization. Influences of the content of cross-linkers and the temperature of decoloration of the nanoparticles were studied. The kinetic measurement of the thermal decolorization of the nanohybrids in water after UV irradiation demonstrated that the rate of ring closure reaction of photochromic dye was retarded by a crosslinking reaction, which was expected to control the free volume surrounding photochromic moiety and provide a passivating micro environment to repel outside interference.
