Rewritable Polarization Optical Memories and Optoelectronic Properties of a New Isomeric Diarylethene

The reversible molecule switching of symmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1, 2-bis(2-methyl-5-thienyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (1o), bas been synthesized for the examination of its properties including photochromism, electrochemical and polarization recording. The results elucidated that this compound exhibited good reversible photochromism in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. The cyclic voltammetry tests demonstrated that the colorless openring isomer was assigned to the unique oxidation process, but the color closed-ring isomer of this compound was assigned to two oxidation processes. The oxidation processes properties can be useful as the oxidation processes electrochemical switching and the oxidation electrochemical switching properties of this different diarylethene isomer can be potential for electrochemistry data storages. Using diarylethene 1 as recording medium, polarization optical recording by readout patterns from the film without polarizers or by applying two orthogonal polarizers at different polarization angles was carried out successfully.
