Hybrid Photochromic Trigger

We propose a combination of nanosized inorganic compounds with light sensitive protein molecule to construct ultra-fast photochromic trigger. Such trigger can be characterized by high optical contrast with very short time of functioning. The composition initially transparent at 400-800 nm contained gelatin film with 20 nm diameter AgBr nanocrystals and bacteriorhodopsin bR) molecules. This composition is placed into redox system. The protein molecules can initiate a big jump of negative potential in nano-and microsecond time interval. leads to fast forming of colloidal silver particles which scatter the actinic light effectively. We guess that mechanism for high optical contrast to appear is close to burst nucleation of LaMer type. The devices of this type could be useful for optoelectronics, photonics, etc.
