A Novel Diarylethene with Photochromic and Optical Storage Properties

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene compound, 1-2-methyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl-2-2-methyl-5-(2-pyridyl)-3-thienylperfluorocyclopentene (1), was synthesized and its photochemical properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in PMMA film, electrochemical, fluorescence and optical storage properties were investigated in detail. The results showed that it can be useful in molecular scale optoelectronics and potential use for data storage.
