A New Photochromic Diarylethene for Polarization Optical Recording Based on a Five-membered and Siz-membered Aryl Unit

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene derivative bearing a six memebered aryl unit 1-(2-methyl-5-(2-methoxylphenyl)-3-thienyl)-2-(2-trifluoro-methylphenyl)perfluorocyclopentene has been synthesiz ed. Its photochemical properties, including photochromic behavior and fluorescent features, have been investigated in detail. The compound exhibited good photochromism both in solution and in PMMA film with alternating irradiation by UV–Vis light. Upon irradiation with UV light, the colorless open-ring isomer 1a turned purple both in solution and in PMMA film. The open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively strong fluorescence not only in solution but in PMMA film. When irradiation with UV light, the fluorescence intensity declined remarkably. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switches along with the photochromism from open-ring isomers to closed-ring isomers. Using this dithienylethene 1b as optical storage was performed successfully.
