Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of a Photochromic Diarylethene Having a Pyrrole Moiety
A new photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-cyano-1,5-dimethyl-4-pyrryl)-2-2-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)-3-thienyl perfluorocyclopentene (1a), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, fluorescences and photo-mode rewritable recording were investigated. The compound exhibits good photochromism with UV/visible light irradiation. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to blue upon irradiation with 313 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 592 nm in hexane and at 613 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable fluorescence intensity and clear fluorescent switches by photoirradiation both in solution and in PMMA film. Finally, photo-mode rewritable optical storage using 1a was performed. The image demonstrated that the compound as optical storage material was very sensitive responding to 633 nm recording laser, and the recorded-signals were provided with high S/N ratio.
