The Effect of Azobenzene-Substituted Phthalocyanine Structures on Their Photo-Controllable J-aggregate Formation

It has been proven that the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene can be used to regulate the J-aggregate tendency of α-aryl/alkoxy-substituted zinc phthalocyanines (azoZnPcs) in non-coordinating solvents. In the present study, azoZnPcs with different length of alkoxy chain were synthesized to investigate their effect on photo-modulated J-aggregation behaviors, using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that Dodecyloxy-azoZnPc with longer alkoxy chains has lower activity in J-aggregate formation than Ethoxyl-azoZnPc. Magnesium phthalocyanine (Dodecyloxy-azoMgPc) was synthesized as well to study the effect of central metal ion. The photo-response of azoMgPc was found to be 15 times faster than corresponding azoZnPc, showing a larger inclination of magnesium ion to coordinate with α-oxygen atom because of their different electronic configurations. These results demonstrated that the photo-induced Jaggregation can be modulated by adjusting the alkoxychain length in the substituted azobenzene moiety or altering the central metal in the Pc plane. The finely modulation of J-aggregation is potential for novel thirdorder nonlinear optical materials.
