Study of a Novel Photochromic Diarylethene Dimer with Stable Colored State Only
The synthesis and spectral properties of a novel photochromic diarylethene dimer have been studied in this paper. Selective modulation of UV-Vis absorption spectra between the two isomers of the dimer has been carried out by the introduction of a spacer which made a red-shift of the maximum absorption wavelength of ring-open isomer from ultra-violet to visible range and no change of the corresponding ring-closed isomer. Only the colored state of the dimer was stable under the irradiation of sunshine because of much higher ring-closed quantum yield and much lower ring-open one than the diarylethene monomer. The fatigue resistance and thermal stability were also excellent. All these properties have implied it could be a kind of good organic super-RENS mask material.
