Nano-patterns Based on Novel Cadmium Phthalocyanines via Controllable Assembling and Disassembling

Phthalocyanines in monomolecular form are usually used as dyes or photosensitizers, but they are also of great potential in self-assembly form because of the unique electronic, magnetic and photophysical properties of the whole assembly. In order to obtain the best properties, it is important to construct arrays in which the phthalocyanines are organized in well-defined geometries so that the molecules can express their function to a maximal level with their chromophores. Herein, a series of cadmium phthalocyanines were designed and synthesized to construct highly ordered assemblies, and their self-assembling properties in solution were simply investigated. By utilizing the changes in the geometry of the peripheral groups of the molecules and the conditions of purification, the amount and the priority form of self-assemblies of cadmium phthalocyanines were successfully controlled. Under the suitable temperature and illumination, either the oligomer in “H formation or the macroscopical assembly in “J formation can be obtained. Furthermore, they can disassemble and reassemble in other specific conditions. Whilst changing the geometries of the phthalocyanine assemblies, we can control the electronic and photophysical properties deriving from the different functional frameworks. It suggest that these materials are potential to be used as photosensitizers with low toxicity or components of nano-patterns by transforming into suitable formation via our control.
