The Synthesis and Mesophase of Benzoatebased Liquid Crystal Copolymer
In this study, a benzoate-based chiral nematic liquid crystal copolymer using isomannide as chiral crosslinker was produced via radical polymerization. A smectic monomer hydroquinone-bis- 4-4 (allyloxy) beznzoate (M1) was synthesized from ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, allyl-bromide and hydroquinone. The chiral LC crosslinkers(M2) was synthesized from the esterification of iso-mannide with 4-hydroxybenzoate. The main-chain liquid crystal copolymer was obtained by UV polymerization using Iregacure 819 as photoinitiator. Chemical structures of the synthesized monomers and polymer were determined by FT-IR and H1NMR and the mesophases were characterized by using differential scanning Calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy.
