The Studies on Synthesis and Mesophases of Polysilozane Liquid Crystals Using Benzoate and Chiral Molecules as Side Chains

In this study, two kinds of mesogenic monomers undecylenate cholesteryl ester (M1) and p-phenylene di-4-(allyloxyl) benzoate (M2) were synthesized. Then the two monomers were fixed onto poly-(methylsiloxane) backbone by grafting polymerization using hydrated chloro-platinic acid as catalyst. Two side-chain polymers with different monomer density and with different Molar ratio of M1/M2 were obtained. The helical structures formed in these two polymers can be solidified by under heating annealing condition. The synthesized polymers were characterized by FT-IR. The mesophases were characterized by using differential scanning Calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy.
