EFFECT OF ALKALINE EARTH OXIDES ON THE PROTON CONDUCTING BARIUM PHOSPHATE GLASSES
Phosphate glasses are potential candidates for fuel cells operating at intermediate temperature. Though barium phosphate glasses are reported to have substantial protonic conductivity, their stability is an issue of concern. The addition of alkaline earth oxide to these glasses could provide the solution to the problem of stability. With this view the study of (35-x) BaO: 65P2O5: xMO(M=Mg, Ca, Sr) glasses has been carried out in the present work. The electrical conductivity, density and glass transition temperature has been studied. It has been observed that the addition of MgO gives significant enhancement in the protonic conductivity of barium phosphate glasses. The conductivity results have been correlated with density and glass transition temperature data.
