STUDY OF LITHIUM BORATE GLASSES WITH ADDITION OF CaO

In the present work the effect of CaO substitution in lithium borate glasses has been studied. The glasses with composition (30-x) Li2O: xCaO: 70 B2O3 have been prepared. The study of electrical conductivity, density, glass transition temperature (Tg) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of these glasses has been carried out. It has been observed that the substitution of lithium oxide by calcium oxide results in significant reduction in electrical conductivity and CTE. These results have been attributed to the structural changes produced in the Lithium Borate by CaO on account of its greater field strength leading to stronger bonds. This in turn, enhances the rigidity of the glass matrix as evident from the CTE results. This is further supported by the observed increase in Tg and density with addition of CaO. An attempt has been made to correlate observed variation in the electrical conductivity and thermal properties with lithium ion content, mass and field strength of calcium ion and the modification in the network caused by CaO addition.
