VARIATION IN DIFFERENT PROPERTIES OF SOLID POLYMER ELECTROLYTES ON GAMMA IRRADIATION: A COMPUTER SIMULATION STUDY
It is well known that whenever solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) are exposed to high energy radiation, the microstructure and the molecular weight distribution of the SPE change by the process of crosslinking and/or scission of the host polymer. Both of these processes may happen simultaneously but one process dominates. Viscosity in solution, is strongly dependent on molecular weight distribution and so is the ion conductivity. In this paper we report a computer simulation study of the changes produced due to irradiation on SPE and verify them with experimentally obtained data (PEO based). We assume the initial polymer electrolyte to have a Gaussian type molecular weight distribution (MWD). Crosslinking and scission processes are repeated N times and averaged over a large number of configurations. We assume that N is proportional to the radiation dose. The resulting MWD has been observed to be bi-disperse, with two peaks. We have calculated viscosity average molecular weight from this final distribution. We compare our results with the experimental results for change in viscosity and ion conductivity with irradiation. Higher viscosity is associated with lower ion conductivity and vice versa.
