DOSY NMR STUDY OF WATER DIFFUSION IN NAFION/SnO2 COMPOSITE MEMBRANE

The behavior of water in Nafion membrane is very important and 1H NMR is the very powerful technique to investigate the chemical structure and proton dynamics. The NMR spectra and diffusion coefficient of proton in Nafion/SnO2 membrane are discussed in detail. Diffusion coefficients of proton in Nafion/SnO2 were carried by using Diffusion Order Spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR. DOSY NMR spectra are usually obtained from the analysis of the signal amplitudes of the pulse field gradient spin echo (PFG-SE) which gives 2D spectra with chemical shift on one axis and the diffusion coefficient on the other. The diffusion coefficient of proton was found to be higher in 11wt% of SnO2 and the value is 1.17x10-9 m2s-1 at room temperature (R.T) with 100% relative humidity (R.H). Three types of protons were observed in DOSY NMR via tightly bound water (non-freezable water), physisorbed water (freezable water) and free water at higher concentration of SnO2 while DOSY spectrum of pure Nafion shows one proton corresponds to the free water which behave like bulk water.
