SOLID-STATE NMR INVESTIGATION OF SULFONATED POLY (ETHER ETHER SULFONE) FOR DIRECT METHANOL FUEL CELL
Sulfonated poly (ether ether sulfone) (SPEES) membrane with different ion exchange capacity (IEC) was prepared by direct sulfonation method. Some SPEES membrane shows higher proton conductivity (0.011S/cm) but lower methanol permeability (8.18*10-7cm2/s) when IEC was equal to 1.63mmol/g. Solid-state NMR technique was applied to investigate and understand the reasons of different properties between sPEES and Nafion 117. 1H NMR data (e.g. 1H NOESY spectra) shown that there was an interaction between methanol and the backbone of SPEES.
