Li+ ION TRANSPORT IN GEL ELECTROLYTES OF PU-EC-PC SYSTEM

Partially cross inked polyurethane gels were synthesized with PEO triol and 4,4’-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate as the reactants, propylene carbonateethylene carbonate as mixed solvents and LiClO4 as salt.. Transport properties of these gel electrolytes were studied by impedance spectroscopy over a wide range of frequency and temperature. The gel-electrolyte with optimized composition showed highest ionic conductivity of the order 10-3(S/cm) at room temperature. The environment of the lithium ion and its mobility in the PU gels were studied by NMR spectroscopy. NMR spectra of the gels indicated the presence of lithium ions in three different environments: The varying widths of all these lines as a function of temperature was attributed to the decreasing mobility of Li+ ions as a consequence of increasing viscosity of the solvent. The most shielded Li resonance peak was further characterised by pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE)-NMR in order to get the diffusion coefficient. Li+ ion conductivity of the gels were calculated from diffusion coefficient using Nernst Einstein equation.
