IMPROVEMENT OF ELECTROCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF TITANIUM-DOPED TERNARY LAYERED CATHODE MATERIALS PREPARED BY THERMAL POLYMERIZATION

To improve the electrochemical properties of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, Ti doped cathode materials, LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3-xTixO2 (x=0, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05), are synthesized via a thermal polymerization method. Their crystal structure, morphology and electrochemical behavior are investigated by XRD, SEM, galvanostatic charge-discharge cell cycling. The lithium ion diffusion coefficient (DLi+) and cell impedance are measured by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and direct current (DC) interruption method. All the prepared compounds have a hexagonal α-NaFeO2 structure and the lattice parameters increase monotonously with increasing the Ti content. Electrochemical tests results indicate that a small amount of Ti substitution leads to a slightly decreased specific capacity, but with enhanced value of DLi+, lower DC resistance and improved cyclability. Moreover, the composition LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3-0.01Ti0.01O2 gives the optimal electrochemical performance with a capacity retention of 87.6% after 100 cycles.
