COBALT-DOPING Li4-XCoXTi5O12 AS ANODE MATERIAL FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

Cobalt-doping Li4-xCoxTi5O12 (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) materials were synthesized by a sol-gel method from Ti(OC4H9)4, LiOH.H2O and Co(CH3COO)2.4H2O. Cobalt-doping increases the lattice parameter and decreases the crystallinity of Li4-xCoxTi5O12.Cobalt substitution for Li deteriorates the lithium storage capacity of Li4Ti5O12, but enhances significantly the rate-capability and structural stability. The generation of mixed valence of Ti3+/Ti4+ caused by the replacement of Co for Li in Li4Ti5O12 can increase the electronic conductivity and alleviate the electrode polarization. Co-ions with high valency located on Li-site, however, may impede the Li-ions diffusion in Li4-xCoxTi5O12 during charge/discharge process and hence affect its specific capacity. Cobalt-doping improve the electrochemical reaction process of Li4-xCoxTi5O12 electrode.
