PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION OF LiCoO2 CATHODE FOR Li-ION THIN FILM BATTERY

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been applied to prepare LiCoO2 polycrystalline cathodes for Li-ion thin film batteries on various substrates including Si wafer, Pt, Au, and stainless steel (SS). The morphologies and the microstructures of the LiCoO2 cathode films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), separately. A c-axis oriented cathode film is grown on Si substrate, and the film on Pt exhibits a highly preferred (003) texture. On the contrary, the preferential orientation (104) is observed for the cathode film on Au while the film on SS shows random orientation. The electrochemical tests indicate that flat charge/discharge plateaus corresponding to the first-order phase transition appear at around 3.9 V vs. Li, resulting in high utilization of the active material and good capability retention.
