ELECTRICAL PROPERTY STUDIES ON HOT-PRESS SYNTHESIZED NANO-COMPOSITE POLYMER ELECTROLYTE (NCPE) MEMBRANES: 70PEO:30 MgSO4+zSiO2
Poly (ethylene oxide) PEO based Nano-Composite Polymer Electrolyte (NCPE) membranes: (70PEO: 30MgSO4)+xSiO2, where x=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 wt.(%), have been casted by hot-press (extrusion) technique. Nano sized (~8nm) SiO2 particles have been used as Iind-phase dispersoid filler material and Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) in the composition: (70PEO: 30MgSO4) as Ist-phase polymer electrolyte host. In a separate study, Ist-phase SPE host, also casted by hot-press method, exhibited highest room temperature ionic conductivity (冦rt)~3.71×10-7 Scm-1.As a consequence of SiO2 dispersal, a conductivity enhancement of an order of magnitude has been further achieved in the NCPE composition: 70PEO: 30MgSO4+5 SiO2 with σrt~3.23×10-6 Scm-1.This has been referred to as Optimum Conducting Composition (OCC) NCPE film. The ion transport mechanism in NCPE OCC has been discussed in terms of basic ionic parameters viz. ionic conductivity (σ), ionic mobility (μ), mobile ion concentration (n), ionic transference number (tion) etc. The conductivity as a function of temperature has also been studied and the activation energy (Ea) has been computed by linear least square fitting of log σ-1/T Arrhenius plot.
