DISLOCATION ASSOCIATED INCUBATIONAL DOMAIN FORMATION IN LIGHTLY GADOLINIUM-DOPED CERIA

Nano-sized incubational domain was observed in 10 at.% gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Dislocations are extensively observed in 10 at.% GDC instead of highly doped 25 at.% GDC, as the inverse relation of the intensity of domain formation in lightly and heavily doped ceria. With the FFT and IFFT analyzing, the incubational domains formed in 10 at.% GDC have different lattice spacing distance and orientation from the neighboring fluorite ceria matrix. Furthermore, similar dislocations are observed in the interface region between incubational domain and ceria matrix. Based on the experimental results, the formation mechanism of dislocation associated incubational domain in lightly gadolinium-doped ceria is rationalized.
