A PEC SOLAR CELL WITH POLYMER ELECTROLYTE CONTAINING PEO AND Hez4N+I-

Solid polymer electrolytes are more promising than gel-type or liquid-type electrolytes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cells due to many advantages. However, their conductivity needs to be enhanced in order to use them in practical PEC solar cells. In this work, an iodide ion (I-) conducting solid polymer electrolyte was prepared using polyethylene oxide (PEO: Mw. 4×106) complexed with tetrahexylammonium iodide (Hex4N+I-) salt. The conductivity of this polymer-salt complex has been further enhanced by incorporating ethylene carbonate (EC) plasticizer. The salt composition was varied to optimize the conductivity using high concentrations of the salt. This optimized electrolyte had a conductivity of 4.7×10-4 at 30 C and 2.2×10-3 S cm-1 at 70 C and was used with a dye sensitized TiO2 electrode for the fabrication of PEC solar cells with the configuration Glass/FTO/TiO2/Dye/Electrolyte/Pt/FTO/Glass. The I-V characteristic curves revealed that the short circuit current density, open circuit voltage and fill factor of the cell are 1.26 mA cm-2, 745 mV and 62% respectively. An overall energy conversion efficiency of 0.6% was achieved under irradiation of 1000 W m.2.
