Influence of Additives in Dielectric Fluids for Electrical Discharge Machining
Studies at the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg in cooperation with oelheld GmbH in Stuttgart have analyzed the influence of selected additives in dielectric working fluids for electrical discharge machining (EDM) on the ignition and breakdown phases of the plasma channel. n-Dodecane has been used as a base fluid, because it is also a main component of a lot of commercially available EDM dielectrics. The influence of two different additive molecules with low toxicity on the ignition and discharge process was observed. The effect of the two additives on the Helmholtz-Layer is discussed.
