Simultaneous Electrical Discharge Machining of Rectilinear Holes Using Electrodes of Various Diameters

Cylindrical or profiled rectilinear holes can be obtained by electrical discharge machining (EDM)using electrode tools having adequate dimensions of the cross section. In the case of the simultaneous machining of multiple holes, if all the electrodes have the same diameter, the work conditions are approximately similar and the electrode tools are affected by similar wear. If the electrode tool diameter is small, the heat developed as a consequence of electrical discharges can not be evacuated in a short time by conductivity to the inactive zone of the electrode tool, and a more intense wear of the electrode tool occurs. This paper presents some theoretical considerations concerning the evolution of the electrode tool wear during simultaneous EDM by using several electrode tools of various diameters.
