Advancement in High Speed Electro-Erosion Processes for Machining Tough Metals
This paper introduces a high-speed electromachining process where metals are removed by intense, controlled electric arcing and discharges. Since this is a non-mechanical process, material removal rate is independent of material toughness. Low rigid, small horsepower machines and less expensive cutters can be used for machining tough alloys. The technology feasibility has been successfully demonstrated in turbine part productions. Examples are given in this paper that have shown more than 3 times of material removal rate increase, 65% cutter cost reduction, and 30% energy saving when applied to Inco718 part machining as compared with the conventional machining. This paper also discusses process mechanisms, capabilities, and limitations.
