Monitoring of EDM Gap Discharge Status with Wavelet Transform Method
The gap discharge status of EDM process affects the machining efficiency and the workpiece surface quality fundamentally. In order to detect the gap discharge status efficiently and accurately, the wavelet transform, which is suitable for the analysis of non-stationary and non-linear signals, is applied to process the EDM discharge waveform series. The experimental results show that each of the EDM pulses can be distinguished by the approximation coefficients of the wavelet transform results. The gap discharge status can be determined by analysis of the local extreme values of approximation coefficients, which is able to be used as the input signal for EDM process control. A data acquisition and processing system based on DSP is developed in this study for the high-speed data transforming and calculation. The experimental results show that the system runs with a good real-time performance. The processing experiment demonstrated the feasibility of the wavelet transform method for online detecting of the gap status and realtime control.
