Development of On-the-Machine Surface Modification Technology in WEDM
As a method of processing cemented carbide, wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is generally used. However, typical surface defects such as cracks, microcraters and recast layers lead to a decreased surface integrity, probably resulting in shorter tool life. Therefore, it is desirable that these surface defects are removed by some method. Thus, an on-the-machine surface modification technology in WEDM, for the purpose of completely removing the surface defects, was developed in this study. The surface defects will be removed in a wire electrical discharge machine by introducing the process of surface integrity cut (Sl-cut) after WEDM. As a result, the surface defects generated by WEDM could be completely removed by incorporating Sl-cut into WEDM.
