Ezperimental Study on Ultrasonic Face Machining of Glass

Reported investigations on ultrasonic machining mainly focused on the small hole drilling of ceramics, seldom concerned of large scale face machining. Its mainly responsible for the absence of the high power ultrasonic machining tools. In the present work, with the development of the high power ultrasonic machine tool, three different kinds of ultrasonic face machining, namely, Non-rotary Ultrasonic Machining with Free Abrasives (NRUSM), rotary ultrasonic machining with free abrasives ( RUSM) and rotary ultrasonic machining with diamond tool (RUM), were designed and comparatively conducted on glass material. Two systems were set up to inprocess monitor the changes of static force and frequency respectively. The effects of static force, spindle speed and amplitude of ultrasonic vibration on material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness were analyzed. The surfaces of workpiece were also observed by a digital video microscope system. Finally, the differences of machining mechanism among the three kinds of the ultrasonic machining were emphasized. Experimental results indicates that rotary ultrasonic machining is an effective method for face milling of glass, which will has a big influence to promote the high efficiency processing of hard and brittle materials, and also its utilization.
