Study on the Surface Integrity of Machined Tool in Micro EDM

The surface integrity is an important index to estimate the machining quality of micro EDM. In this paper, the factors influencing surface integrity in micro EDM have been identified through experiments. The surface topography has been observed, the causes of tool electrode surface cracks and material exfoliation after machining of micro tools by WEDg have been analyzed, and the physical phenonmena generating different machined surfaces under different machining conditions have been discussed. Through experimental study, the effects of some influencing factors for surface integrity in micro EDM have been demonstrated. Finally, some possible machining conditions to improve micro tool electrode surface quality have been proposed.
